Philip Herman—Executive Director : e-mail
Whether working with suburban gang youth or straight A poor students, Philip Herman has spent the last 17 years assisting young people move forward in life. He has been involved in directing a 12 suburban gang taskforce, worked for two local park districts doing community outreach, was director of a private-operating family foundation that ran four junior high and senior high mentoring/tutoring programs, and is the founder and director of GWAYO, Inc. that has 104 current students and 24 graduates in college.

Philip Herman is a leader of people. That leadership has manifested itself in leading public officials (Mayors and elected trustees, school officials, police chiefs, park district directors, and social service agency directors) in planning and addressing how to address suburban gang problems. He has lead by writing curriculum and developing programs that serve as models of how to work with the poor and truly enable them instead of making them dependent on systems and handouts. He is an accomplished public speaker who speaks with passion and expertise because of so many years of direct service work in the trenches.

Philip is an administrator who knows how to manage and lead by example both budgets and people. He has overseen staff as small as another person and him to over 55 people underneath his leadership. He has written and administered grants that got funded as small as $1,000 to as large as $180,000. Also, he has overseen three separate construction projects of $45,000, $175,000, and $225,000. Most importantly, Philip has given oversight to youth programs that have been as big as 220 young people.
